Internationalism through Independence
Labour for an Independent Wales Pamphlet Series
Over the coming months, we will be publishing a series of pamphlets, deep dives, case studies, and hosting events on the big questions. For example, how can a Welsh state become an international force for good? How does independence allow us to reinvent the economy? How can we interact, trade, and work with British, European and Global nations better? Essentially: what does independence look like?
Each season of pamphlets will include an introduction to the subject area detailing where we are and why we need to discuss this from a democratic socialist point of view. We will also host a number of guest publications throughout the season from members, academics, people who have lived experience of the subject area. Events, case studies, and deep dives will also feature throughout each season.
Get involved in the discussion and engage with us on these key policy areas which begin to explore democratic socialism through independence.

Introduction
Social solidarity is at the heart of the Labour movement. We have stood together, shoulder to shoulder, working, whenever we could, with the other nations of the British Isles. Welsh Labour has worked with this spirit of solidarity and internationalism throughout the pandemic and there is no reason why this shouldn’t continue.
The borders of Wales are currently defined by a regressive, nationalistic Westminster. Our current borders are nationalist, not internationalist. This must change.
An independent Wales is not just a Wales that can embrace both democratic socialism and internationalism – an independent Wales is the only Wales that can have both.

Building on the good international relationships we’ve developed through the Welsh Government’s International Strategy for Wales, we have an opportunity to develop through deeds and words our reputation as a globally responsible nation.

Building on our international reputation
Wales’ international reputation as an entity in and of itself is good. Our sports fans are our travelling ambassadors, our commitments to peace and internationalism via shared culture are long established, and the relationships we’ve built across the world are stronger than ever.
The tragic discarding of a positive, inclusive, internationalist image of Wales by association with a regressive, inward-looking Westminster is addressed here.
